Dorethea Alston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Alston, Jr., of Leland, North Carolina, and a student at Southeastern has been awarded a scholarship by the General Electric Corporation. The scholarship is for out standing minority students. Ms. Alston has all the colleges and universities in the United States to choose from. Ms. Alston is an honor student at Southeastern. She also serves on several Student Government committees. Ms. Alston plans to further her education at the University of Southern California, where she plans to major in bio medical engineering. Medical school is the next rung in the educational ladder for her. She hopes to attain the knowledge needed to become a general practitioner. Dorethea wishes to express a special thanks to Dr. Marlin who saw her outstanding abilities, and saw fit to nominate her for the scholarship. He knew that such a brilliant mind should not be wasted, and not only encouragement, but financial assistance Was needed. —Audrey Grant. Legislative Budget Cut May Mean Teacher's Unemployment Many of Southeastern’s instructors who have signed nine - month contracts may be unemployed this summer. In past years instructors holding these contracts were given the option to work the summer session. A legislative cut in this year’s budget and a 27 percent increase in enr ollm ent have eliminated reserve funds that previously allowed this option. It is not definite yet as to how many instructors will be teaching this summer. The college administrators will not know the amount of money they have to operate with until the state legislature meets in May. Even then, it could be July before the legislators act on the budget requests. In last year’s funding the Legislature cut Southeastern’s budget by 3 percent, or roughly $115,000. Rumors have been circulating that further cuts may be made this year. Southeastern’s ad ministrators have em phasized that instruction will not be allowed to fall off as a result of shortages in funds. If any depart ment is overloaded, ad ministrative funds can be shifted to the instructional budget to employ the necessary instructors. All administrators and staff will be employed as usual. Meanwhile, the ad ministration has been cautioning the concerned instructors “to plan for the worst, hope for the best.” If the teachers are not employed by the college, their only alternative for income is to find a part - time job. Because of the nature of their contracts, they will not be allowed to collect unemployment. Students could find themselves competing with their former instructors for the available summer jobs. — Phyllis McDaniels and Alton Chewning In Concert On May 6, at 8 p.m. the piano duo of Richard and Francis Hadden will perform in the S.C.C. auditorium.
